Jubileum Zaal and House Samuel

This Institute continued with the training of missionaries and mission staff until 1962, when the Dutch Reformed Church in SA decided to move this training to the Theology Faculty at Stellenbosch. A total of 567 missionaries were trained by the Institute and many alumni were involved with church planting in various parts of Africa. Many of the alumni also served for years at the former Dutch Reformed Missions Church. After the closure of the Mission Institute, the buildings were handed over to Huguenot College. Today House Samuel is used as a residence and the Jubileum Zaal is used for academic and other College activities.

The unique contribution of Murray is embodied in the Samuel campus. House Samuel and the Jubileum Zaal are part of the building complex of the early Mission Institute which was started in 1877 by Dr Andrew Murray and the Wellington Dutch Reformed Church as part of his vision to make the Wellington Dutch Reformed Church a missionary congregation. Initially buildings were hired and occupation of House Samuel was only taken in 1883. The Jubileum Zaal was built in 1905 as a lecture hall. The operations were initially funded by the local congregation, but this was transferred to the Dutch Reformed Church in SA in 1903.
