Let the thought of breathing your own life into another be your incentive to have God breathe into you His life. If we have to pass on our life to others let us see that it be a pure and holy one.

Andrew to John at his son’s birth

To commemorate the 192nd birthday of Dr Andrew Murray (May 9th 2020), we developed the short series Celebration of Family: Letters of Andrew Murray to his children.

Episode 9 John

The third son, John Neethling Murray receive his calling to mission at the age of sixteen. After completing his studies at the Zending Instituut Wellington in 1893, he is sent as missionary to Waterberg.

Draught, famine, lack of housing and transport and malaria are but some of the challenges. After several fever attacks, Minnie returns home to her parents to recuperate – but this becomes a prolonged separation. On the brink of a divorce, John wrestles with God in prayer:

Ik wist niet hoe ik verlost moest worden uit mijn toestand. Ik bad God om hulp, en licht uit zijn woord. Ik begon Jesaja 30 te lezen en las de woorde “In stilheid en vertrouwen zal uw sterkte zijn.”

After four years of absence, Minnie returns. Ten years later, when John serves as chaplain during the WWI, Minnie effectively runs the mission.
