“ … We gave him to his God in the covenant once, and gave him a thousand times since that; and now we do lovingly give him up to Him who will keep him for Himself and for us too…” – Andrew on the occasion of Howson’s death
To commemorate the 192nd birthday of Dr Andrew Murray (May 9th 2020), we developed the short series Celebration of Family: Letters of Andrew Murray to his children.
EPISODE 6 HOWSON
Howson Rutherfoord Murray, was Andrew and Emma’s long-awaited first son, born on 14th March 1862 in Worcester. After the initial joy, it must have taken the parents some adjustment to find that this son does not show the same mental and emotional intelligence and capabilities as their first three daughters. Not able to complete his education, Howson was send to learn a trade with his mother’s brother in Cape Town. His unexpected death at the age of 23 in a cart accident, must have been a severe shock. At the time Andrew and Emma were in the then Transvaal on an evangelizing tour, and could not attend the funeral, but held a ‘little service of love and faith’ at the same hour.
