“Do pray amid your Studies, that you may be kept by God’s Spirit and Grace in entire consecration to Him.”
To commemorate the 192nd birthday of Dr Andrew Murray (May 9th 2020), we developed the short series Celebration of Family: Letters of Andrew Murray to his children.
Episode 8 Haldane
After Howson’s death, Haldane is looked upon as ‘the eldest son’ by his father. Haldane, being of independent mind, was the most accomplished student of the Murray-sons and won the coveted JB Ebden Prize to study at Cambridge. He made rapid progress in the field of education and was promoted to the position of school inspector. He and his wife, Minnie Parkes an equally progressive thinker, shared a love of literature and farming.
Haldane dies ‘in action’ on September 1916 in East Africa during WWI. At the time, his younger brothers John and Charles were still in action. Despite the loss, and being seriously ill and frail, Andrew holds unto his loving God, praying on the eve of 1916:
“Let us seek in the New Year to have our hearts open, and our prayers, our petitions made deep, to ask and receive more from God.”
