“Zijn was de onafscheidbare amanuensis van haar vader … Op haar sympathieke arm heeft hij dan ook geleund.” –  De Kerkbode on Annie’s death 1929

To commemorate the 192nd birthday of Dr Andrew Murray (May 9th 2020), we developed the short series Celebration of Family: Letters of Andrew Murray to his children.

EPISODE 7 ANNIE

Annie Jemima Murray (25 October 1863 – 5 March 1929) was a keen scholar of literature and loved books and writing. Her passion was partly fulfilled as librarian of the Huguenot Seminary and College, but more so as Andrew’s fulltime ‘scribe’ for his last twenty years. As such, Annie shared a close living and working relationship with her father Andrew. Her memories, notes, diaries and the transcriptions of his diaries, working notes and the quotes of others he took to heart, shed light on Andrew’s personhood. She writes:

One morning after watching the sun rising over Groenberg, Father prayed:

We have just seen the sun rise. It is Thy almighty power. It is Thy Omnipotence. In all nature around us Thy power is working patiently and persistently. May it work powerfully in our hearts taking away all sin and self-sufficiency; all pride and self-exaltation.
